What Can a Chemical Peel Do for My Skin?

Looking for glowing, radiant skin? A chemical peel could help with that.

Just under your skin’s surface lies another layer of undamaged skin. Everything from environmental pollutants and stress to the sun can leave our skin looking uneven, dull, or pigmented. When patients visit our Bend, OR, cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Gerald Peters, complaining of these issues, a chemical peel is one of the first treatments we recommend.

Are there different kinds of chemical peels?

While all chemical peels work in very similar ways, they have varying strengths depending on your needs. Today’s chemical peels are tailored to your needs. More superficial issues such as age spots and breakouts can be improved through mild chemical peels, which offer a faster recovery time.

Those with more serious wrinkles and other problems that impact deeper layers of the skin will most often benefit from deeper chemical peels. Our Bend, OR, the cosmetic dermatologist would be happy to discuss which chemical peel would be right for you based on your needs and cosmetic goals.

What skin problems can a chemical peel treat?

This popular skin resurfacing treatment can be used to treat:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Acne
  • Superficial scars
  • Pigmentation

In fact, our dermatologist has noticed that something as simple as a chemical peel, which has been around for decades, can actually provide better results against breakouts and dark patches (melasma) than other skin resurfacing options.

How does a chemical peel work?

The type of chemical we use will depend on the strength of the chemical peel that you’re looking to get. For example, light chemical peels will most often use alpha-hydroxy while deep chemical peels may use carbolic or trichloroacetic acid. The skin is thoroughly cleaned and then the chemical is applied. In just a few minutes the acids will remove the dead skin cells and the outermost layer of the skin, which is also the most damaged.

A chemical peel stimulates the body’s natural healing process, so new cells form as the face heals to reveal fresh, beautiful skin. It will also stimulate collagen production to tighten and firm up the skin.
